As rates of mental health challenges continue to rise, so does the urgency for facili- ties that not only provide critical ser- vices but also foster healing from the moment someone walks through the door. At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to providing trauma- informed care – a service model approach that recognizes the wide- spread impact of trauma and seeks to promote positive outcomes through safety, trust and empowerment. The new Crisis and Acute Care Center, which we are building in Aurora, is purpose- fully designed to support trauma- informed care through its archi- tecture and interior design features. While trauma- informed care refers to the clinical approach that rec- ognizes and responds to the effects of trauma on individuals, trauma- informed design ensures the physi- cal environment of care also promotes healing, well-being, safety and dignity. The new facil- ity will provide a full continuum of care, ensuring that clients not only receive immediate help in times of crisis but also have access to ongoing outpatient treat- ment and long-term recovery sup- port, all under one roof. The first floor of the approximately 50,000-square- foot facility provides immediate access to critical services through its walk-in crisis clinic and Connect to Care program. Individuals experienc- ing a behavioral health or substance use crisis can walk in without an appointment and receive on-the-spot evaluation from a licensed therapist. If immediate care is needed, they can be directly admitted into the crisis stabilization unit or withdrawal man- agement program for urgent treat- ment. For those who are not in crisis but still need support, the Connect to Care team is available to guide them to the appropriate services. n Trauma-informed design features.
