Snow Capped Cider will open its first taproom and wine bar at 105 Grand Mesa Drive July 4. The Snow Capped Cider Taproom & Wine Bar will carry an extensive collection of 100% Colorado cider and wine, curated by owner and head cidermaker Kari Williams and her team. The taproom will also serve a selection of wood- fired pizza, charcuterie, paninis and small bites and will provide educational experiences with visit- ing winemakers. “It's a great piece of real estate,” Williams said. “It’s right at the stoplight in Cedaredge, so all the tourism from the Grand Mesa is coming down, and we are a main focal point in town. It's such a great little niche piece of prop- erty, you couldn't get a better piece of real estate. With the improve- ments that we've made on the property, it's a huge contribution to our community.” Williams and her husband, Ty, competed to buy the building ini- tially but didn’t get it. Williams leases the 1,232-square-foot prop- erty from local owners Karen and Dwight Benson, who were also fruit growers at one time. The arrangement allowed both parties to realize a better potential for the property, Williams said. “I own our production facil- ity and other real estate, and the building needed some extensive stuff done to it,” Williams said. “So, if I had purchased it as Snow Capped Cider, I don't know if I would have gotten this far to make it look that fabulous. It's a win-win for the community. It's really interesting because two of the original families from this little area that are fruit growers ended up combining forces to make [the site] really amazing.” The taproom occupies a refur- bished gas station from the 1940s, situated at the only stoplight along Main Street in Cedaredge. The gas station had been nonoperational for nearly three decades following the removal of its fuel tanks. Williams designed and per- formed the renovations on the property over the course of a year, restoring the original floors, install- ing concrete patios and landscap- ing the surroundings. The cin- der block building features high ceilings and antique glass block windows. The exterior features 20 apple trees, a small lawn and a new fence, and the truck that Ty Wiliams learned to drive in sits in the parking lot alongside apple bins and wine barrels. The interior pays homage to the building’s his- tory, with old farm implements in the bathrooms and pictures of vin- tage cars on the walls, including a mural of Kari Williams’ grandfa- ther with his first car. The bar area features wine and bourbon barrel staves. Snow Capped Cider grows its own apples for its cider, draw- ing inspiration from English and French orchard traditions. The Snow Capped Cider Orchard is one of the last big family owned orchards in the Surface Creek Val- ley, having been in the family since the late 1800s, Williams said. The orchard is one of the largest apple producers in Colorado with over 2 million apple trees in total. It is also one of the highest-elevation orchards in the Northern Hemi- sphere. The cidery has been craft- ing its ciders since 2012. Other News n PUEBLO – A freestanding retail building that is home to a Dollar General traded hands for $1.25 million.
