16 MORRIS AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT Elementary School A Message from Principal Ose Spring is on its way… even if it’s taking the scenic route! After a relatively mild winter, we’re more than ready to welcome the sunshine, longer days, and all the energy that spring brings to our school. At this time of year, our students in grades 3–6 begin taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) in reading and math. In addition, our 5th graders will complete the science assessment. These tests give students an opportunity to show what they’ve learned, and they help our teachers identify ways to support student growth moving forward. This year, our 5th graders will kick off testing with the Reading MCA on April 10. The rest of the grade levels will follow, with all testing wrapped up by the first week of May. As the weather warms up, our students also take part in some amazing learning experiences beyond the classroom. Many classes visit the West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) and the Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab (SWELL)—two incredible resources right in our backyard. Spring also brings a variety of exciting field trips: from the Wahpeton Zoo with our 1st graders to visits to the State Capitol and Fort Snelling with our 6th graders, these trips make learning come alive. Parents, just a reminder, we pay for these experiences with our “Invest in Our Youth” fund. We ask that parents contribute $35/year per child to this fund. If you have not contributed to the fund this year, please consider doing so now. You can contribute in person at the elementary office or online by going to https://wcif.org/fund/mas/ and selecting “Invest in Our Youth” from the drop-down menu. As I write this I am reflecting on the last year at Morris Area Schools. There have been many challenges and blessings in our school district. We continue to work through the challenges of staffing in certain areas. We were blessed to have the residents of the district approve a bond to add additional classroom space for community education and early education, as well as, moving sixth grade back into the elementary school. The bond also provides for re-branding with our new logo, upgrades to the tennis courts, and some work at Big Cat stadium. The project is on schedule.
