❇❨ ❯❙❚❊◆ ◆❊ ❚❖◆ ✁t❛✂ ✥r✄t❡r Waverly native Anna Hohag has seen a lot of things change in her life - she re- cently celebrated her 100th birthday. The party took place at The Lodge in Howard Lake, where Hohag has resided since 2014. At the par- ty, several photo col- lages showing events from her life were on display, and guests were given the oppor- tunity to learn more about her. History of Hohag Hohag was born in 1923, and her maiden name is Painschab. Her parents were im- migrants from Austria who moved to the area shortly before Anna was born. Ho- ☎✆✝ ☎✆✞ ✟✠✡ ☛☞☛✌✡✍☛ and six brothers. Growing up, Anna and her family moved often, although each farm they moved to was near Winsted Lake. She graduated from Howard Lake High School during a time where school buses were new to the school. After graduation, Hohag lived in an apartment in Cokato, which was above the bakery where she worked. During this time, she also began dating Stanley “Tim” Hohag, whom she would eventually marry. She and Stanley lived on the same road growing up, and had known each other since they were 10 years old. In late 1941, Stanley and two of Anna’s brothers, Joe and Herman, de- cided to move to Cal- ifornia to build planes for the military. Want- ing to be near Stanley, Anna took a Grey- hound bus across the country to Los Ange- les. Shortly after meet- ing him in California, the couple made their way to Las Vegas for a weekend, where they got married. “I really hadn’t thought about it. You know, things happen,” Anna said. Once they returned to California, Anna began to attend busi- ness school when, after a few months, WWII began. Stanley, along with Anna’s brothers, re- ceived notices that they must register for the military draft. The four individuals made their way back to Minnesota, where the men were able register in their home state.
