With two teams desperately needing a win, the Glencoe Brewers and Hamburg Hawks left it all on the line in a CRVL cross-divi- sion showdown. Despite leading early, the Brewers needed to rally late after letting their lead slip away in an 8-7 thrilling win over the Hawks July 12 at Hawks Field. Glencoe jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Hamburg battled back with some clutch hitting. The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sac- rifice fly from TJ Hokanson. After hold- ing the Brewers in check in the top of the fifth, Hamburg tied the game thanks to clutch hits from their veterans. Clint Aretz brought the Hawks within one on an RBI double with two outs. Then it was Robbie Smothers who came through once again with two outs to tie the game at three with an RBI single that scored Aretz. Glencoe would respond with a single run in the sixth and seventh innings thanks to an error and RBI single from Jake Chris- tianson forcing the Hawks to rally once again. They did just that. Running out of chances, Hamburg ral- lied in the bottom of the eight to not only tie the game but take the lead. Aretz was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then Smothers reached base on a catcher’s inter- ference to bring the tying run to the plate. With two outs, Hamburg came through in the clutch once again as Craig LaPlante delivered an RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. TJ Hokanson would tie the game at five with an RBI single and Craig Alvarez would put the Hawks on top with an RBI single of his own. Hamburg’s lead would not last for long as Glencoe would respond with an answer of their own. The Brewers would strike for three runs in the top of the ninth thanks to big hits from Nate Litzau and Brockton Jordahl. The Hawks would stage a rally of their own once again in the bottom of the ninth. LaPlante delivered with another clutch two-out single to bring Hamburg within one but the Hawks would strand the tying run at third to end the game as Glencoe held on for the win. Off the seven runs scored by the Hawks, six came with two outs but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
