Watertown showed just how good they are as they knocked off the Plato Bluejays 5-1 June 8 in a battle of unbeaten teams. Scoreless through four innings, Watertown broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Devils would add to their lead in the bottom of the seventh as they scored four times to put Plato in a 5-0 hole with just six outs left to play with. The Bluejays would scrap across a run in the top of the ninth but that’s all they could muster as the Red Devils picked up a big 5-1 win. Zach Iten was brilliant on the mound for the Red Devils. He went seven innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Pat Tschida closed the door with two strong innings as Watertown became the lone undefeated team left in the Crow River Valley League with the win. Offensively, the Red Devils got produc- tion from all over the lineup. Tschida set the tone at the top of the order going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Ben Smith and Ryan Hangartner each drove in a run in the middle of the lineup while Ben Theisen had a double and scored two runs in the bottom of the order. For Plato, Gabe Ropeke had two of the team’s six hits in the loss. Zack Stockman, Matt Odegaard, Bennett Lepel, and Dylan McCormick each added one hit apiece. Will Hoernemann took the loss on the mound for Plato. He went six and a third innings, allowing four runs off of five hits. With the loss, the Bluejays dropped their first league game of the season. That leaves Watertown as the lone undefeated team left. The Red Devils will be looking to be the second team in a row to go undefeated in league play after the Waconia Lakers ac- complished the same feat last season.
