GABE LICHT Editor A er more than 40 years, Delano resident Sharon McKisson is concluded her career as a professional artist. Her final show and sale tool place Sept. 23. “I always liked art, but never thought of it as a ca- reer,” McKisson said. For six years, she taught art and home economics at Richfield High School. She stepped away from that position to raise her two daughters and play tennis. “My tennis partner was an artist,” McKisson said. “I went to her show and thought, ‘You can do this as a career?’ I thought I’d go into painting, and started do- ing shows.” A studio above her garage allowed her to focus on her cra . “I had a couple open houses every year,” McKisson said. “I just kept on doing it, and expanded.” She went on to show and sell her art at shows, with her three favorite shows being in Edina, Uptown, and Excelsior. McKisson has painted in Florida; Hawaii; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Honduras; New Zealand; and Tahiti. “Someone o ered me a chance to go to Hawaii to paint at one of their stores,” McKisson said. “I went to Hawaii for two weeks. ey couldn’t pay me, but they put me up in a condo they owned. I painted one day on a Saturday for the opening of a store. ey invited me back a second year.” For many years, she traveled to Puerto Vallarta to paint. “I was at a workshop. is one artist said she had a friend who wanted to have someone paint for her, and she would get free lodging,” McKisson said. “I went to Puerto Vallarta, and stayed at her villa, and did paint- ing lessons for five days. at’s how I first went down there. en, I continued to go down there o and on for 16 years. I stayed at her place the first three or four years, then we ended up getting our own place.” A chance encounter led her to paint in New Zea- land.
